Legendary Emmy-winning actor and comedian Ed Asner, who has brought us laughter and entertainment for more than four decades, today announced the creation of The Ed Asner Family Center (TEAFC), dedicated to promoting self-confidence in differently abled individuals and bringing balance and wellness to those individuals and their families.A longtime advocate for the developmentally disabled and those on the autistic spectrum, Asner personally understands the challenges that Special Needs families face, and the healing power of a creative, loving environment. The center is currently fund raising for the flagship site in Los Angeles, the first of many branches nationwide, and will debut classes and programs in June 2018.Said Asner: “This is a dream of mine. To establish an oasis of creativity in every special needs community. A place where our most beautiful dreamers of all can have their opportunity to thrive and in doing so learn valuable lessons about themselves and the world and in the same building give families an opportunity to be healthy. This center of enrichment is where we can develop a most important part of our being, character.”The Ed Asner Family Center will be offering a wide variety of Arts programs as well as mental health support and de-stress classes such as mindfulness and yoga dedicated to promoting self-confidence and balance. Additional classed include music, dance, voice over, theatre, fine arts, culinary, resume building and job mentorship classes.“Less than a decade ago I was a single mother with four young children, two impacted by autism,” said Navah Paskowitz Asner, Executive Director of The Ed Asner Family Center. “I was in desperate need of mental health support due to my challenges in life and financially unable to pay for the support I needed. Our goal in TEAFC is to provide mental health support to ALL special needs families while giving their children enrichments at the same time. We plan to create an environment where the parents, the typical siblings, the entire family begins to not just endure but to live and thrive and feel joy and HOPE in their lives no matter how hard their personal burden may be.”The Ed Asner Family Center plans to offer various approaches to therapy. The center’s mental health programs are aimed at helping those experiencing depression, anxiety, worry, grief, or anger management problems. These issues are much more prevalent with the addition of a special needs family member. Therapy is offered by licensed clinicians including marriage and family Therapists, clinical Social workers and other clinicians trained to help couples, families or individuals to address their ongoing needs. Clinicians explore with the client productive ways to de-stress and find support.Family Counseling and Individual Therapy: This program is designed to help all family members in the special needs household, including grandparents or caregivers and typical siblings. The family will learn how to comfortably express their feelings, de-stress and find better ways to communicate with each other, to solve problems, be able to understand special needs and to address struggles in the home, school, workplace or in the community. By defining clear goals and ways to support those goals, clinicians work closely with all family members. Sessions are focused on teaching the skills necessary to encourage the family as a whole to be become better communicators and focus on a healthier way of living and a higher quality of life for the entire family. Each individual family member can be supported by peers in a group setting or a private one- on-one counseling session.Sibling Group: This program offers support for the sibling of a special needs child. Often the siblings wonder why everything is focused on their brother or sister and not on them. They might feel that they don’t get enough time to do the things they want to do. Siblings may feel guilt or anger towards their brother or sister for always being the center of the parent’s attention. Participants will be able to express feelings through games and activities while attending group sessions as well as find comfort and support with likeminded peers.Enrichment/Vocational Programs: The Ed Asner Family Center will feature enrichment and vocational classes from some of the top established programs in the country and is proud to partner with Spectrum Laboratory, Autism Works Now, Autism Movement Therapy and The Miracle Project. For more information about The Ed Asner Family Center, and sponsorship opportunities contact: Navah Paskowitz-Asner at Navah@edasnerfamilycenter.org.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court seems likely to side with drugmaker Merck in a dispute over the warning label on its bone-strengthening drug Fosamax.During arguments Monday in a lawsuit against the New Jersey-based company, only two justices seemed inclined to rule against Merck. A trial court initially threw out claims against Merck. An appeals court revived them. The case before the Supreme Court involves hundreds of people who sued Merck, alleging they were injured by Fosamax. They say they suffered Fosamax-related thigh-bone fractures and that Merck failed to provide adequate warnings on the drug’s label.Merck says the Food and Drug Administration rejected its warning attempt because the FDA believed available data didn’t initially support one.Fosamax is prescribed to prevent and treat osteoporosis in women who have gone through menopause. The Associated Press

New Delhi: IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad Wednesday sounded a warning to social media companies not to allow their platforms to be abused to influence elections, and said the Election Commission is maintaining vigil on the issue. Stating that the purity of Indian democracy is “too sacred”, the minister said while the use of social media for campaigning was okay, platforms should ensure that the data is not abused under any cimcumstances. Prasad said, “the Election Commission is already monitoring it (situation). Let them monitor it…They held a meeting…it is only appropriate and desirable that the EC must monitor, co-ordinate and lay the ground rule for working of social media during elections. “On my side, I can only make this observation that the purity of Indian democracy is too sacred, and social media please ensure that the data is not abused to influence election. If someone wants to use social media for campaigning I have no problem.” Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K The comments come a day after the social media intermediaries and the internet and mobile association Tuesday told the Election Commission that they would shortly come up with a draft ‘code of ethics’ for the industry as part of a mechanism to prevent abuse of social media platforms during the Lok Sabha elections beginning April 11. Representatives of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and TikTok had been called by the poll panel to discuss the issue of evolving mechanism to prevent abuse on social media platforms. The EC also wanted to ensure that elections are insulated from outside influence. A statement issued by the EC had said the meeting also discussed evolving a ‘notification’ mechanism by social media platforms for acting upon the violations of Section 126 of Representation of the People Act, 1951, and preventing misuse of these platforms. Section 126 of the Act prohibits advertising and campaigning on TV and other electronic media during the silent period, which is 48 hours before the end of polling. With ensuing general elections, the Indian government had warned social media platforms of strong action if any attempt was made to influence the country’s electoral process through undesirable means. Over the past few months, social media players and tech firms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google have promised to infuse more transparency into political advertisements on their platforms, and have since announced a slew of measures as part of election integrity efforts.

Brooker isn’t done with the video game world after previous episodes Bandersnatch and Playtest, with Klementieff’s character suiting up as a Street Fighter-esque warrior in a Street Fighter-esque digital arena. Grace is also there, with an orangey tan and ponytail and a grim look on his face. Whether those things are connected to his mood remains to be seen.Rounding out this impressive cast is Miley Cyrus using her multitalents to play a pop singer with trippy digitized backup dancers. Check out the Djib Mo YouTube video for another hit of Black Mirror-esque imagery, which seems to mirror some of her look. The Marvel-DC crossover probably isn’t a thingStars Anthony Mackie and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are looking suitably grim-faced for their Black Mirror episode. Netflix/Entertainment Weekly Black Mirror knows how to paint a portrait of society — and in our case, it’s one that’s obsessed with Marvel and DC.On the way to the first trailer, Netflix stoked our excitement by letting loose a first look at the episode starring Mackie and Abdul-Mateen II a day beforehand, via Entertainment Weekly. After Avengers: Endgame, Mackie is on his way to greater stardom having taken over Captain America’s mantle. Capitalizing on that, Brooker said of his episode: “It’s the Marvel-DC crossover no one saw coming.”But following the trailer, it seems like Brooker was toying with us as usual, since Mackie looks to be less superpowered and more in strife with his wife. But we won’t know for sure until June 5.Bandersnatch is a one-off interactive Black Mirror film on Netflix. Netflix Release DateAs the trailer confirmed, the release date is June 5.Brooker had a tidbit for us when talking about the season 5 release. “It’s all imminent-ish. It’ll be out soon,” he said in a January interview with RadioTimes.com. “We’d already shot like, one of the episodes of season 5 before we did Bandersnatch.Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. Mike Marsland/Getty “At one point we weren’t sure whether we were going to make Bandersnatch part of season 5.”Black Mirror season 3 arrived on Netflix in October 2016. Season 4 launched in December 2017. Season 5 was pushed back to accommodate Bandersnatch as the sprawling choose-your-own-adventure epic took a lot of hard work to pull off.”Doing Bandersnatch was like doing several episodes at once,” Brooker told RadioTimes.com. “It was Netflix’s suggestion as well — ‘Let’s do it as its own thing’. As it expanded and got bigger and bigger and bigger it became apparent that the way to do this was to do it as a standalone thing.”The starry castBlack Mirror alumni includes Jon Hamm, Bryce Dallas Howard, Hayley Atwell and Domhnall Gleeson.Cyrus is excited for us to see her episode. Sorry, Kelly and Yorkie fans.Despite the show’s penchant for including Easter egg references to earlier episodes, many of which you can find in Bandersnatch, Brooker isn’t delivering on his comments about doing a “Return to” episode that could expand season 3’s much-loved romance.”I’ve always wanted to do a ‘Return to’ story,” Brooker said in his book Inside Black Mirror, published in November, 2018. “Return to San Junipero! Or do Crocodile again, but backwards, like Memento. Crocodile Two: Back in Business.”Even if Brooker does go back to the ’80s utopia of San Junipero, Kelly and Yorkie’s story will be left alone.Beloved episode San Junipero won’t have a sequel. David Dettmann/Netflix “In terms of a sequel to San Junipero, no, certainly not in its current form — I don’t think we’d revisit those characters unless we had a really, really good reason,” Brooker told NME.”And I very much doubt that we would do that as an episode. Maybe as a graphic novel or some sort of commemorative biscuit. But we wouldn’t want to pick that apart and tinker with it, as we’d like to leave Kelly and Yorkie where they are.”Guess we’ll just have to make do with original, groundbreaking storytelling. 1:47 Comment These TV shows and movies obsess over tech’s dark side TV and Movies Notably, according to the Netflix press release, this is the episode featuring Klementieff, and Abdul-Mateen II plays a college friend to Mackie’s character who kicks off the life-changing events.Full season 5 trailerSet to the powerful Lonely Feelings by Djib Mo, season 5’s trailer confirms Black Mirror’s music choices remain on point, as well as showcasing a starry list of cast members and a few possible themes the three stories will explore.Scott, recently seen in the acclaimed Fleabag, looks to be a man driven to gun-wielding insanity by everyone’s constant connectedness to technology. Mackie’s character may be in strife with his marriage, in part because he has eyes for another woman pictured on his phone. A friendless teen played by Rice of Ladies in Black and the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home may be getting more than she bargained for with a little robot buddy, bringing Eighth Grade mixed with Alexa-gone-wrong vibes. A possible theme of this episode is what it’s like for a young girl to grow up and be herself in the digital age when a “lovable” robot like Aibo or Lovot takes the form of a Barbie-esque robot. Netflix’s press release says of the plot: “A lonely teenager yearns to connect with her favorite pop star — whose charmed existence isn’t quite as rosy it appears…” The end of the trailer, where the charging robot, named Ashley Too, says “Get this thing out of my ass” is a lovely weird Black Mirror highlight, and possibly hints at further exploration of the “cookies” from White Christmas.Striking VipersThe title Striking Vipers doesn’t exactly help clear up the mystery the trailer for Mackie’s episode poses around the tech unsettling his character’s life. We’re introduced to a couple trying for kids, but there’s something standing in the way. It appears to be connected to the nodes Mackie’s character affixes to his temples that blur over his eyes with some kind of digital cloud — what is he looking at? Could it have a connection to the “grains” from The Entire History of You? Rachel, Jack and Ashley TooMiley Cyrus’s episode features the singer not only voicing the companion robot Angourie Rice’s character befriends, but she also plays singer Ashley O, who looks to be under heavy management intent on exploiting her talents with robot tie-ins — this really is the near future. Guns, mobile phones, creepy robots… Black Mirror must be back.Season 5 of Charlie Brooker’s sci-fi anthology series has sidestepped out of the shadows with not just one trailer but three, which finally confirm cast member Miley Cyrus, alongside Anthony Mackie, (Falcon from Avengers: Endgame), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Mantis from Aquaman) and a few more surprises including a second Marvel team member in Pom Klementieff (Mantis in the Avengers).Creepy robot, check. Screenshot by CNET/Netflix Along with a release date — June 5 — we know just three stories will be told this time round, same as the first two seasons of the show when it was originally shown on Channel 4 in the UK. Excitingly, all three of these episodes come from the pen of Brooker himself. For everything else we know about the upcoming season, check out the explainer below.PostersBlack Mirror episodes are like mini movies, so here are three movie-type posters to go with the upcoming episodes, released by Netflix on Tuesday. That’s not Hannah Montana in plastic packaging. Netflix 3 individual episode trailersIt wasn’t long after Netflix uploaded the season 5 trailer (which you can view below) that it piled on three individual trailers for the new episodes.SmithereensIf we read into episode titles literally, then Smithereens will continue to pave Black Mirror’s path of unhappy endings. It features Andrew Scott and Topher Grace in what looks to be an exploration of one’s relationship with… one’s car. We do often sit in our cars alone with our dashboard technology, and in this case it looks like self-help audio guides, sat navs and Uber are the tech going rogue. “Don’t forget to rate your drivers,” the Netflix YouTube caption reads, and its press release: “A cab driver with an agenda becomes the centre of attention on a day that rapidly spirals out of control.” Now playing: Watch this: 25 Photos Share your voice 1 Note: This article was originally published March 13 and is updated as new information rolls in. Listen To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: lecsWhen it comes to the Trump administration’s growing trade war with China, Houston’s industry is probably better insulated than the rest of the U.S., according to experts.Steve Lewis, the China fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute, told Houston Matters that China typically imports only what it can’t produce domestically – and on which it’s willing to pay a premium.“If they’re getting something from Houston, it’s usually something they really need,” Lewis said. “It’s usually something like energy-related equipment [or] specific chemicals or plastics that actually are cheaper here than they are in China, because we have source supply coming from shale oil and shale gas.”But Lewis said the city’s port is more vulnerable. “I think there’s about $20 billion a year that goes through the Houston port,” he said. “And there’s all those jobs associated with the port authority and the airport that relate to that. So, accountants, shipping, truckers, everything that’s associated with that will also be affected by a trade war.”Lewis also said there’s another big risk to the Houston economy from a trade war with China. If slowing trade hurts China’s economy enough, Chinese demand for energy will drop. That in turn could drive down the price of crude oil.Listen to the full interview with Lewis in the audio below: X 00:00 /13:10 Share
Drinking too much alcohol may disrupt the healthy balance in the lungs and impact your breathing, a new study has warned. In the study, adults who drink excessively were found to have less nitric oxide in their exhaled breath than adults who do not drink. The finding were published in the journal ‘Chest’, and is significant because nitric oxide helps protect against certain harmful bacteria that can cause respiratory infections.“Alcohol appears to disrupt the healthy balance in the lung,” said a researcher. Nitric oxide is a colourless gas produced by the body during respiration. The researchers examined data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES). It conducts interviews and physical examinations to assess the health and nutritional status of Americans. For the study the researchers have examined data from 12,059 adults who participated in NHANES between the years 2007 and 2012. Excessive drinkers were defined as heavy drinkers (more than one drink per day on average for women and more than two drinks per day for men) and people who binge drink at least once per month (four or more drinks per occasion for women and five or more drinks for men).In the sample population researchers examined, 26.9 percent of the participants weto be excessive drinkers. The researchers found that exhaled nitric oxide levels were lower in excessive drinkers than in adults who never drink, and the more alcohol an excessive drinker consumed, the lower the level of nitric oxide. In an asthma patient, the amount of exhaled nitric oxide in a breath test provides a good indication of how well the patient’s medication is working. “Excessive alcohol consumption might complicate the results of such tests. “Lung doctors may need to take this into consideration,” the researcher said.
Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. With millennials checking their phones 150 times a day and the average person regardless of age spending five hours a day on his or her smartphone, mobile devices are firmly entrenched as today’s leading media.By 2019, mobile advertising will represent 72 percent of all U.S. digital advertising.Related: 104 Facts You Didn’t Know About Mobile Marketing (Infographic)This applies to all ecommerce sites; even product-review sites like Yelp or BestAdvisor are in this mix. The message is that if you’re not being smart about reaching your customers via mobile, you’re leaving a ton of money on the table. So, how can you be smart? Here are five mobile marketing practices companies must adopt in the age of “the mobile moment.”1. Location-based marketingThe era of location-based marketing is here. Businesses send customers notifications when they pass a store and promotions when they are near strategic locations where the brand’s products or services would be useful. In this context, Foursquare recently released Foursquare Analytics, which grants client businesses and marketers access to location intelligence and technology for more than 90 million geofenced locations around the world. The company has also moved to integrate Uber into its system, enabling users both to discover places to go and also get there, using the same app. In fact, users can now order a ride from inside Foursquare City Guide without having to switch applications. No need to type in the address, look up directions or struggle through translations.2. In-app marketingGoogle Play currently offers 2.8 million apps, while Apple has 2.2 million. With such intense competition, apps must offer the most personalized service possible, or risk being ditched. In-app marketing fuels relevance and engagement, which in turn drives retention, loyalty and lifetime value. An example of this is the challenge faced by India’s Federal Bank as a result of that country’s 2016 “demonetization plan” (when it replaced its 500 and 1,000 rupee notes with 2000 notes). Within months of the plan’s implementation, over 14 million Indians downloaded the bank’s new apps, and digital-payment use surged up to 80-fold among India’s 260 million smartphone owners.Related: Top 7 Reasons You Should Make Mobile Marketing a PriorityTo capitalize on this deluge of new app users, the bank turned to Insert, an in-app marketing platform that allows marketers to create and publish targeted campaigns quickly, independent of development resources. It further deployed contextual campaigns around a national holiday, as well as other targeted promotions, directly in the app. This resulted in an immediate uptick in conversions and retention.3. SMS marketingMobile text marketing is the focus of many misconceptions, but with 91 percent of millennials text messaging weekly, marketing is essential. Many corporations, including Coca-Cola, Walmart and Toys ‘R’ Us, have integrated text messaging into their mobile-marketing strategies. When a Domino’s pizza franchise in North Carolina wanted to improve advertising at college sports games, it turned to EZtexting, a short messaging marketing service (SMS). Previous campaigns had displayed Domino’s web address in ads, but the franchise found that most fans didn’t bother jotting down a URL during a basketball game.In response, Domino’s reconfigured its new ads to tell viewers to text a certain number to get free or discounted pizza. Responses skyrocketed.4. Mobile marketing measurementMobile ad revenue recently surpassed the amount spent on desktop ad revenue. With billions of dollars being dedicated to reach customers on their mobile devices, a scientific approach to mobile marketing has become necessary. AppsFlyer illustrates this approach, as a mobile attribution and marketing data-analytics company that helps marketers pinpoint their targeting, optimize their ad spend and boost their ROI.Take the example of Game Circus, creators of the smash hit mobile video game Coin Dozer. Without the right data, mobile game developers were having difficulty reacting quickly to changes in the market or determining if the quality of users generated by certain ad channels was improving or declining over time. The marketing team took action: It began using AppsFlyer to link attribution data to the engagement and LTV metrics it was monitoring at the game or campaign level. The result? Coin Dozer subsequently achieved a 2.3-times increase in total installs and more than a 40 percent increase in gross profit.5. QR codesOne way to swiftly provide relevant information to mobile users is through the use of QR codes. These digital bar codes act as shortcuts for getting valuable information into the hands of customers and prospects. QR codes are highly versatile and can function as a Facebook “like” button as well as offer coupons, provide tourists with information and perform other functions. One memorable QR campaign was the “Guinness QR code on a beer glass” action brilliantly dreamed up by advertising agency BBDO. When customers poured a Guinness — and only a Guinness — into a special glass, the beer’s black color filled out a code on the glass that was scannable with a smartphone. Once it was scanned, customers could tweet about their pints, update their Facebook status, check in via Foursquare, download coupons and promotions and invite friends to join them. The QR code could even launch exclusive Guinness content.Final wordsEach of these tactics can be duplicated — by you. What’s more, each tactic offers your company the ability to increase exposure, grow, attract and retain clients in ways that are relevant, timely and appealing to their interest in digital media.Related: 4 Tips For Mobile-Marketing Success in 2017So, give one or more of these a try: By continuing to develop your business’s mobile-marketing activities, you’ll be positioning your company exactly where your customers are hanging out.
