By 2010 — a down year by New England’s standards but the first year of the Pats’ experiment with two-tight end jumbo packages — 31 percent of Brady’s passing yards were coming on play-action passes; rookies Gronkowski and Hernandez helped the Patriots to the highest rate in the league, a stark contrast from 2006 when Brady ranked 29th out of 32 qualified passers. The unpredictability goes for other supposed Brady calling cards, like consistent yards after the catch. Brady typically rates among the league leaders in YAC per completion, but he dipped to 24th out of 33 qualified passers in 2014, a season in which the Pats went 12-4 and won the Super Bowl. There’s no telling how long Brady will keep making it deep into the postseason, but just as compelling as wondering how long the old man can keep this up is waiting to see what sort of offense he’ll bring with him if he does.VIDEO: The Patriots better worry about Julio Jones Related: Hot Takedown When the New England Patriots upset the St. Louis Rams in Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl, way back in 2002, Brady was throwing passes to Kevin Faulk, Troy Brown and David Patten. By 2008, he was throwing to the greatest wide receiver of all time, backed by a deep, talented receiving corps. Once Randy Moss left town, the Pats retooled with perhaps the best tight end in NFL history — and again once that tight end was repeatedly lost to injury. These were all very different players with very different strengths, but the Patriots found success with all of them. One of the more remarkable things about Brady appearing in his seventh Super Bowl on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons at age 39 is how many different styles of offense he has found success in. It’s rare enough to find a quarterback who can make all of the throws, let alone one who can do it to so many different players with so many different game plans.Brady isn’t going to beat anyone with his legs (although he’s an effective sneaker), but the Patriots are unmatched in tweaking their offensive strategy for the personnel on hand. New England has had great offensive seasons in which over 70 percent of passing yards went to wide receivers, a high rate for the NFL. The Patriots have also had great seasons when WRs caught half of their yards or less, a rarity in the league. Five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker was greatly responsible for some of the Patriots’ most concentrated (and successful) passing seasons, eating up yards alongside Moss and Gronkowski. During his four best years, the Patriots were truly a star-driven passing offense, with fourth and fifth options like Jabar Gaffney and Danny Woodhead making a comparatively small impact in the passing game. In 2011, New England’s most top-heavy season of the Brady era, Welker, Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez accounted for 33 of Brady’s 39 receiving touchdowns and over 70 percent of the team’s receiving yards. But the Pats don’t need stars in order to succeed. In 2005, Deion Branch, David Givens and Troy Brown caught just a little over 50 percent of the Pats’ receiving yards, with Ben Watson, Tim Dwight and Kevin Faulk adding contributions. An injury to Edelman in 2015 led to a similar situation – Gronk was the only player to crack 700 receiving yards, but eight players had at least 250. Of course, it helps to have some talent — the 2006 Patriots didn’t get much happening in their passing game with Reche Caldwell as WR1.That success with diverse sets of receivers has also come with diverse sets of game plans. Unlike, say, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers rolling left or Cardinals signal-caller Carson Palmer gunning the deep ball, conventional wisdom says that Brady’s game morphs to fit his personnel. One way we can test whether that’s true is to look at whether the things Brady was known for early in his career have continued to be central to his game as his career has progressed. At one point, the nearest thing he had to a specialty (besides those QB sneaks) was the play-action pass. Play-action is an effective part of any offense, and certain quarterbacks tend to rely on it more than others. But while Brady mastered it alongside future Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, it has drifted in and out of his game over the years.ESPN’s more advanced passing data only goes back as far as 2006, after Brady had already established himself as a top quarterback — but a year before Moss and Welker showed up and the Pats began breaking passing records. Even picking up then, we can see drastic shifts in how often the Pats have gone to the run fake and how much of the passing offense it has made up. The 2016 Pats are light on wide receivers, although not exceptionally so for a Brady-led team. Julian Edelman topped 1,000 yards, and Chris Hogan established himself as a useful second receiver, but Danny Amendola mostly disappeared (putting up 243 yards in 12 games), and Malcolm Mitchell wasn’t exactly devastating. Meanwhile, tight ends Martellus Bennett and Rob Gronkowski (in eight games) combined for 1,241 yards, while running back James White chipped in another 551 in receiving. But, thanks in part to the Patriots, these positional distinctions don’t mean as much as they used to. Gronk isn’t a WR like Randy Moss was, but he is still more or less used as a receiver (a distinction that is, as Seahawks pass-catcher Jimmy Graham found, worth a lot of money in the pay scale). Perhaps a better way of looking at Brady’s versatility is how he does in the presence or absence of top targets. And while the Pats’ best seasons have come with major weapons at their disposal, they do just fine without them, thank you. Hot Takedown’s Super Bowl Special
Brooker isn’t done with the video game world after previous episodes Bandersnatch and Playtest, with Klementieff’s character suiting up as a Street Fighter-esque warrior in a Street Fighter-esque digital arena. Grace is also there, with an orangey tan and ponytail and a grim look on his face. Whether those things are connected to his mood remains to be seen.Rounding out this impressive cast is Miley Cyrus using her multitalents to play a pop singer with trippy digitized backup dancers. Check out the Djib Mo YouTube video for another hit of Black Mirror-esque imagery, which seems to mirror some of her look. The Marvel-DC crossover probably isn’t a thingStars Anthony Mackie and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are looking suitably grim-faced for their Black Mirror episode. Netflix/Entertainment Weekly Black Mirror knows how to paint a portrait of society — and in our case, it’s one that’s obsessed with Marvel and DC.On the way to the first trailer, Netflix stoked our excitement by letting loose a first look at the episode starring Mackie and Abdul-Mateen II a day beforehand, via Entertainment Weekly. After Avengers: Endgame, Mackie is on his way to greater stardom having taken over Captain America’s mantle. Capitalizing on that, Brooker said of his episode: “It’s the Marvel-DC crossover no one saw coming.”But following the trailer, it seems like Brooker was toying with us as usual, since Mackie looks to be less superpowered and more in strife with his wife. But we won’t know for sure until June 5.Bandersnatch is a one-off interactive Black Mirror film on Netflix. Netflix Release DateAs the trailer confirmed, the release date is June 5.Brooker had a tidbit for us when talking about the season 5 release. “It’s all imminent-ish. It’ll be out soon,” he said in a January interview with RadioTimes.com. “We’d already shot like, one of the episodes of season 5 before we did Bandersnatch.Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. Mike Marsland/Getty “At one point we weren’t sure whether we were going to make Bandersnatch part of season 5.”Black Mirror season 3 arrived on Netflix in October 2016. Season 4 launched in December 2017. Season 5 was pushed back to accommodate Bandersnatch as the sprawling choose-your-own-adventure epic took a lot of hard work to pull off.”Doing Bandersnatch was like doing several episodes at once,” Brooker told RadioTimes.com. “It was Netflix’s suggestion as well — ‘Let’s do it as its own thing’. As it expanded and got bigger and bigger and bigger it became apparent that the way to do this was to do it as a standalone thing.”The starry castBlack Mirror alumni includes Jon Hamm, Bryce Dallas Howard, Hayley Atwell and Domhnall Gleeson.Cyrus is excited for us to see her episode. Sorry, Kelly and Yorkie fans.Despite the show’s penchant for including Easter egg references to earlier episodes, many of which you can find in Bandersnatch, Brooker isn’t delivering on his comments about doing a “Return to” episode that could expand season 3’s much-loved romance.”I’ve always wanted to do a ‘Return to’ story,” Brooker said in his book Inside Black Mirror, published in November, 2018. “Return to San Junipero! Or do Crocodile again, but backwards, like Memento. Crocodile Two: Back in Business.”Even if Brooker does go back to the ’80s utopia of San Junipero, Kelly and Yorkie’s story will be left alone.Beloved episode San Junipero won’t have a sequel. David Dettmann/Netflix “In terms of a sequel to San Junipero, no, certainly not in its current form — I don’t think we’d revisit those characters unless we had a really, really good reason,” Brooker told NME.”And I very much doubt that we would do that as an episode. Maybe as a graphic novel or some sort of commemorative biscuit. But we wouldn’t want to pick that apart and tinker with it, as we’d like to leave Kelly and Yorkie where they are.”Guess we’ll just have to make do with original, groundbreaking storytelling. 1:47 Comment These TV shows and movies obsess over tech’s dark side TV and Movies Notably, according to the Netflix press release, this is the episode featuring Klementieff, and Abdul-Mateen II plays a college friend to Mackie’s character who kicks off the life-changing events.Full season 5 trailerSet to the powerful Lonely Feelings by Djib Mo, season 5’s trailer confirms Black Mirror’s music choices remain on point, as well as showcasing a starry list of cast members and a few possible themes the three stories will explore.Scott, recently seen in the acclaimed Fleabag, looks to be a man driven to gun-wielding insanity by everyone’s constant connectedness to technology. Mackie’s character may be in strife with his marriage, in part because he has eyes for another woman pictured on his phone. A friendless teen played by Rice of Ladies in Black and the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home may be getting more than she bargained for with a little robot buddy, bringing Eighth Grade mixed with Alexa-gone-wrong vibes. A possible theme of this episode is what it’s like for a young girl to grow up and be herself in the digital age when a “lovable” robot like Aibo or Lovot takes the form of a Barbie-esque robot. Netflix’s press release says of the plot: “A lonely teenager yearns to connect with her favorite pop star — whose charmed existence isn’t quite as rosy it appears…” The end of the trailer, where the charging robot, named Ashley Too, says “Get this thing out of my ass” is a lovely weird Black Mirror highlight, and possibly hints at further exploration of the “cookies” from White Christmas.Striking VipersThe title Striking Vipers doesn’t exactly help clear up the mystery the trailer for Mackie’s episode poses around the tech unsettling his character’s life. We’re introduced to a couple trying for kids, but there’s something standing in the way. It appears to be connected to the nodes Mackie’s character affixes to his temples that blur over his eyes with some kind of digital cloud — what is he looking at? Could it have a connection to the “grains” from The Entire History of You? Rachel, Jack and Ashley TooMiley Cyrus’s episode features the singer not only voicing the companion robot Angourie Rice’s character befriends, but she also plays singer Ashley O, who looks to be under heavy management intent on exploiting her talents with robot tie-ins — this really is the near future. Guns, mobile phones, creepy robots… Black Mirror must be back.Season 5 of Charlie Brooker’s sci-fi anthology series has sidestepped out of the shadows with not just one trailer but three, which finally confirm cast member Miley Cyrus, alongside Anthony Mackie, (Falcon from Avengers: Endgame), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Mantis from Aquaman) and a few more surprises including a second Marvel team member in Pom Klementieff (Mantis in the Avengers).Creepy robot, check. Screenshot by CNET/Netflix Along with a release date — June 5 — we know just three stories will be told this time round, same as the first two seasons of the show when it was originally shown on Channel 4 in the UK. Excitingly, all three of these episodes come from the pen of Brooker himself. For everything else we know about the upcoming season, check out the explainer below.PostersBlack Mirror episodes are like mini movies, so here are three movie-type posters to go with the upcoming episodes, released by Netflix on Tuesday. That’s not Hannah Montana in plastic packaging. Netflix 3 individual episode trailersIt wasn’t long after Netflix uploaded the season 5 trailer (which you can view below) that it piled on three individual trailers for the new episodes.SmithereensIf we read into episode titles literally, then Smithereens will continue to pave Black Mirror’s path of unhappy endings. It features Andrew Scott and Topher Grace in what looks to be an exploration of one’s relationship with… one’s car. We do often sit in our cars alone with our dashboard technology, and in this case it looks like self-help audio guides, sat navs and Uber are the tech going rogue. “Don’t forget to rate your drivers,” the Netflix YouTube caption reads, and its press release: “A cab driver with an agenda becomes the centre of attention on a day that rapidly spirals out of control.” Now playing: Watch this: 25 Photos Share your voice 1 Note: This article was originally published March 13 and is updated as new information rolls in. [Representational Image] Xiaomi global head Hugo Barra bids adieu to Beijing, plans to return to Silicon Valley In Picture: Xiaomi’s Vice President Hugo Barra looks on in front of the company’s logo during a group interview after the launching ceremony of Redmi Note 3 in Hong Kong, China March 21, 2016.REUTERS/Bobby Yip-RTSBEFOHugo Barra, VP (global) Xiaomi, on Facebook, confirmed that he has decided to quit the company and return to US.After a successful stint at Google, Hugo Barra left the Silicon Valley to Beijing, to lead the consumer electronics start-up firm Xiaomi in 2013, which back then, was touted as China’s Apple.Charismatic Brazilian-born Barra can be credited for literally creating a new brand image for Xiaomi from scratch. Under his leadership, Xiaomi made huge strides in developing devices with top-notch hardware and yet cost half of what the competitors offer. Xiaomi’s flagship phones Mi 4, Mi Note, Mi 5 and Mi Note 2 and also Redmi Note 3 series received huge appreciation and as an icing on the cake, recently launched Mi Mix set a new benchmark in the smartphone industry. The Mi Mix is a first of its kind in smartphone industry to boast edge-less display (with 93.4 screen-to-body). This apparently helped Xiaomi shed its copy-cat tag and become a trend setter. That’s not all; Barra also helped Xiaomi successfully expand operations in India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and 20 other markets including Russia, Mexico, and Poland.Especially in India, Xiaomi witnessed huge growth and in 2016, it recorded $1 billion revenue in a single year, fastest technology company to achieve that mark within three years of entering the Indian market.Barra’s leadership acumen and equally impressive showmanship made Xiaomi product launch event reminded us of Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs eccentric (in a good way) showmanship. Xiaomi VP (Global) Hugo Barra at Redmi Note 4 launch in New Delhi, January 19, 2017.Xiaomi Blog (official) webcast page (screen-shot)Now, Barra citing health concern and long term isolation from family, has decided to move back to the Silicon Valley to start an un-disclosed venture later in the year.Hugo Barra is slated to leave Xiaomi’s administration at the end of February, but will continue to work in limited terms with the company as an advisor-only role. Here is the Hugo Barra’s Facebook full transcript:THANKS FOR A GREAT 3.5 YEARS, MI FANS — When Lei Jun and Bin Lin came to me nearly four years ago with the opportunity to help turn a young rockstar startup into a global player, I embarked on what has been the greatest and most challenging adventure of my life. I moved to Beijing, 6,500 miles out of my comfort zone in Silicon Valley, to build from scratch a startup team within a bigger startup. This journey has been nothing short of spectacular in every way, and I can proudly say that Xiaomi Global is the first baby I helped bring into the world :)But what I’ve realized is that the last few years of living in such a singular environment have taken a huge toll on my life and started affecting my health. My friends, what I consider to be my home, and my life are back in Silicon Valley, which is also much closer to my family. Seeing how much I’ve left behind these past few years, it is clear to me that the time has come to return. As I thought about this late last year, I concluded that Xiaomi is in a very good place on its global expansion path, and if there was ever going to be a good time for me to come back home, that time is now — when I can confidently say our global business is no longer just an in-house startup. We turned India from a dream into Xiaomi’s largest international market with $1 billion in annual revenues, faster than any company in India’s history. We expanded into Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and more recently 20 other markets including Russia, Mexico, and Poland. We teamed up with Google to launch our first official product in the US, and with our successful debut at CES 2017 — where we won 3 prestigious awards — the world now sees that Xiaomi is a global player changing the tech industry through our simple promise of bringing innovation to everyone.More importantly, we now have a team of some of the most remarkable and enthusiastic people I have ever worked with, and leaving them all behind is without doubt the most difficult part of stepping away. At the same time, I know I’ll be leaving them in very good hands. Xiaomi now has a strong, globally-minded executive team who will continue to drive the momentum we began together.I want to thank the Xiaomi founders, and particularly our CEO Lei Jun, who has been a mentor and a friend. It has been both humbling and uplifting to work with a man whose vision is redefining the role technology plays in all of our lives, and the role the China tech industry plays in the world. As a friend and shareholder of the company, I am honoured that he has been very supportive of my transition and has asked me to remain an advisor to Xiaomi indefinitely, as we continue to extend our reach around the world. For me, as for many people in China, the Spring Festival brings new beginnings, and I will be transitioning out of my role at Xiaomi in February after Chinese New Year. I will take some much-needed time off before embarking on a new adventure back in Silicon Valley. To my Xiaomi colleagues in China and India: as I leave our home in Beijing and Bangalore, please be assured that I will remain your loyal and grateful Mi fan 虎哥. I will be watching diligently from the sidelines and rooting for you guys all the way! And, of course, a very special shout-out to all our Mi fans around the world, who have won my heart for life!Stay in touch guys :)I’ll be seeing you,Hugo
From Snow White to Tarzan, Robin Hood to Alice, Lord Rama to the Pandavas, Ali Baba to Winnie the Pooh, Dorothy (of Oz) to Harry Potter, from works of Shakespeare to Henry David Thoreau, Rudyard Kipling to Bill Bryson and Enid Blyton to Cheryl Strayed, there is one common thread, wholly or partly, to some of our most remembered and favourite literature – forests as a setting for key action.Earth’s dominant terrestrial ecosystem, forests are commonly taken to mean a large area with trees or other woody vegetation though there isn’t any common global definition – 800 definitions are available around the world! What is however more acceptable and indisputable is their role in human imagination and culture, be it folklore, fantastic or legendary, and modern literature, whether children or adult. They can represent a place of refuge or menace, of succour or challenge, of restful contemplation or exciting adventure, a metaphor for nature at its most basic and untrammeled by human civilising, and a source of sustenance – or danger. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Microsoft Corp is making it easier for apps written for rival Google Inc’s Android and Apple Inc’s iOS systems to work on Windows phones, in a bid to attract users to its unpopular mobile devices, the company’s operating systems chief said on Wednesday. The move marks a radical shift in strategy for the world’s biggest software company, which still dominates the personal computer market but has failed to get any real traction on tablets and phones, partly because of a lack of apps.Microsoft has found itself in a circular trap, as many developers will not build apps for Windows phones which have few users, and few people want the phones which have fewer apps than Android or Apple phones.Getting apps built for Android and iOS onto its phones and tablets could be a shortcut to breaking out of that trap.”Microsoft is making a major play to win back developers,” said Forrester analyst Michael Facemire. “They’ve opened up the once-impenetrable castle walls.”Speaking at Microsoft’s developer conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Executive Vice President Terry Myerson said developers will be able to use the vast majority of their Android code to turn their apps into Windows-compatible versions, which will work on Windows phones running a special subsystem. The apps will technically be Windows apps and available only through Microsoft’s online app store. The apps would automatically use Microsoft’s services such as Bing maps, rather than Google’s services, as an app would on an Android phone. That is a crucial distinction because Google gets revenue from ads on services rather than from the Android system itself.Myerson also announced a surprise move to make it easier for iOS developers to make Windows apps, saying that Microsoft’s developer software will be compatible with Objective C, the main programming language used by Apple.Google declined to comment. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Microsoft, which bought Nokia’s handset business last year, has only 3 percent of the global smartphone market. By contrast, Android phones, led by Samsung, control 81 percent of the market and Apple 15 percent, according to Strategy Analytics.Microsoft is scheduled to release its new Windows 10 operating system this summer, which for the first time will run across PCs, tablets and phones. It said on Wednesday it is aiming for one billion devices running Windows 10 in two to three years time. Its new browser will arrive as Microsoft Edge, replacing the waning Internet Explorer, when Windows 10 is released, the company said.(Reporting by Bill Rigby; Editing by Marguerita Choy and Richard Chang) This story originally appeared on Reuters Register Now » April 30, 2015 3 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
