ECOWAS Commission Praises Pres. Sirleaf for Visit to Headquarters

first_imgDr. Babatunde O. Ajisomo, the Special Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission in Liberia, has praised President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for being the first head of authority of ECOWAS to visit the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. In the regional body’s more than 40-year history, President Sirleaf is the first sitting Head of Authority to pay a visit to the Commission in order to know and see the work being done there, according to Dr. Ajisomo.“We were very glad to receive Her Excellency. Past Heads of Authority have just worked from their countries’ capitals and have just attended meetings but never did they come to visit with the Commission in Abuja,” he said on Wednesday.Madam Dr. Fatimata Dia Sow, ECOWAS Commissioner, Social Affairs and Gender, presented a symbolic check of US$70,000 to the Liberian Government, through the Ministry of Gender, for additional support to Ebola orphans and others in Liberia.Earlier, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Social Affairs and Gender, recognized the leadership role played by Madam Sirleaf in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus disease. Dr. Sow, who was joined by Dr. Ajisomo to present the check to Gender and Social Welfare Minister Julia Duncan Cassell, added: “As the challenge abated, we continued to monitor the doggedness of the President to get rid of Ebola and also address the challenges coming from it. As a mother, the passion Mama put into the struggle is well acknowledged not only in the ECOWAS region, but the world at large.”She used to occasion to call for a moment’s silence for the nearly 5,000 persons who lost their lives in Liberia, adding: “We lost people to Ebola. The pain of the loss is still fresh in our minds.”In spite of a two year absence, Dr. Sow stated that the challenge created by Ebola remains one of the nightmares for the ECOWAS Commission; and although they continue to discuss how best to assist the victims, she indicated that they are still discussing with their partners on preparedness to deal with such challenges should they occur again in the region. Gender Minister Duncan Cassell praised ECOWAS for standing with Liberia during the fight against the deadly disease. She assured the organization that the 9,000 Ebola orphans will be reached and informed about the ECOWAS gesture.
