Grocery gift cards coming to Hamilton

Most power has been restored to Toronto, but 160 customers in the city still rang in the new year in the dark. It’s been 11 days since the ice storm struck. Yesterday, Toronto residents who had lost food during the outage lined up at Ontario Works offices to try and get their hands on grocery gift cards. They ran out before the day was over, but more will be available for pickup Thursday and Friday.Hamilton mayor Bob Bratina says residents will get grocery gift cards too. He issued a statement saying, “…it will not be a matter of ‘if’ hamilton will participate, but ‘how’ it will be rolled out, and ‘how much’ aid would be required.”City staff will work with the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre to determine the specifics and who qualifies.Gift cards will be distributed to homes that lost their power for 48 hours or longer.
