KMC orders shutdown of all swimming clubs operating in the area

first_imgKOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has instructed to shut down all swimming clubs operating at College Square for an indefi nite period, following the death of Mohammad Shahbaaz on Sunday morning.”We will investigate the reason behind the death of the youth, who unfortunately drowned at the pool. We will find out whether the swimming clubs have been abiding by the guidelines issued by us or not. All the swimming clubs at College square have been asked to shut down till our probe is complete,” said Debashis Kumar, Member, Mayor-in-Council (Parks and Gardens). Th e directives mentioned that these clubs will need to employ at least two trainers at each pool. “The rules that no swimmers should be allowed in the pool without a life jacket and divers will have to be deployed in the pool for the little swimmers, were among the guidelines,” an official of the Parks and Gardensdepartment of KMC said. Th e guidelines also stated that in case of children, guardians should not leave their wards and go elsewhere while they are being trained in swimming. Shahbaaz had joined as a member of Th e Calcutta University Institute College Square (Vidyasagar Udyan) swimming section barely a week ago.last_img
