first_img WORCESTER, Mass. – The Drake University volleyball team defeated Columbia, 3-0, Saturday, Sept. 1, afternoon to win the Holy Cross Invitational and remain unbeaten this season at 6-0.The Bulldogs opened the tournament Friday with a 3-0 win over Rhode Island and 3-1 win over Holy Cross. Drake has now won 18 of the 19 sets it has played this season.”I’m really proud of our team and how we finished the Holy Cross tournament,” said Drake head coach Darrin McBroom. “We had a tough match against Holy Cross last night and watched Columbia beat Holy Cross today so we knew Columbia would be a tough team that would give us trouble if we didn’t take care of business.”Drake’s fifth three-set sweep of the season came by set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 over the Lions. Drake hit .245 in the win with Cathryn Cheek (Coppell, Texas) recording eight kills, 12 digs and three blocks while Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) continued her strong play with seven kills and nine blocks. As a team, Drake outblocked Columbia, 12-4.The Bulldogs faced a late, 21-18, deficit in the first set but closed the set in grand fashion with seven straight points as Columbia could not break Grace Schofield’s (Mundelein, Ill.) serving. Tubbs and Cheek combined for four kills during that span to rally the Bulldogs for a 25-21 win in the first set.The second set was far less dramatic as the Bulldogs led the entire way with a cushion of four or more points for the majority of the set en route to the 25-21 win. Drake kept control of the match in the final set, building up a 22-14 lead before Columbia staged one brief rally that Drake quickly thwarted to win the set 25-20 and collect the team’s sixth win of the season.”I was really proud of our team today and the way we maintained great composure on the court and everyone did their part,” McBroom added. “It was truly a team effort in a beating a good Columbia team and winning another tournament.”Following the tournament, Schofield was the named the tournament MVP while Tubbs and Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. After spending the last two weekends on the road, Drake brings its unbeaten record to the Knapp Center for next weekend’s Hotel Renovo-Wildwood Lodge Invitational.
